Can you add landscape lighting to a patio you did not build?
Yes. Low voltage lighting is regularly retrofitted to existing patios, walkways and planting beds. The wiring is shallow and the fixtures go in without tearing up what is already there.
What kind of landscape lighting do you install?
Path and step lights for safety on walkways and stairs, uplighting on trees and the face of the house, and wash lighting along walls and seating areas. Most projects use a mix rather than one type everywhere.
Is the lighting on a timer, or do I switch it on myself?
Low voltage systems run off a transformer, and that transformer can be set on a timer or a photocell so the lights come on at dusk and shut off on their own. You can also switch it manually if you prefer.
What is polymeric sand and why does it matter?
It is the sand swept into the joints between pavers. It hardens once it is watered in, which locks the units against each other and keeps weeds and insects out of the joints. Ordinary sand washes out and the joints open up.
Why does the base matter more than the pavers on top?
Because the base is what carries the load and handles ground movement. Good pavers on a thin or poorly compacted base will settle and wave within a few winters. The surface is the part you see, the base is the part that decides how long it lasts.
