The base is the job

Excavation to the right depth, aggregate base compacted in lifts, drainage planned before the surface goes down, buried edge restraint around the perimeter and polymeric sand swept into the joints. A patio that still sits flat after ten Michigan winters was built that way from the start.

Common Questions

Can pavers be installed over an existing concrete slab?

Usually we take the slab out. Laying over concrete traps water between the two layers and raises the finished height, which causes problems at doors and steps. Removing it lets us build the base properly and keep the surface at the right elevation.

What border and edging options are there?

Most patios and driveways get a border course in a contrasting color or a different unit, which frames the field and gives the edge a finished line. Cobble and cut stone borders are both common. Underneath, buried edge restraint is what actually holds the field in place.

How is the paver pattern chosen?

It depends on where the surface is and what it carries. Herringbone interlocks the units against each other and is the standard choice for driveways. Running bond and basketweave suit patios and walkways. We match the pattern and the unit size to the house as well as the use.

Do you install permeable pavers?

Yes. Permeable systems let rainwater pass through the joints into an open graded stone base instead of running off the surface. They need a deeper excavation and cost more, so we recommend them when there is nowhere to send a drain line or when impervious coverage on the lot is a constraint.

Do you cover Auburn Hills and the surrounding communities?

Yes. We work across Oakland County and the surrounding Metro Detroit area, including Auburn Hills, Rochester Hills, Lake Orion, Pontiac, Bloomfield Township and Troy.
