A patio is only as good as the base under it.

Excavation to depth, aggregate compacted in lifts, drainage planned before the surface goes down, buried edge restraint and polymeric sand in the joints. Skip any one of those and Michigan finds it by the third winter.

Common Questions

How do you handle a sloped or uneven yard?

Either we regrade it or we hold the grade with a wall and build on two levels. On a gentle slope the patio can be pitched and graded into place. Where the fall is steeper, a retaining wall and a set of steps turns the drop into usable space instead of fighting it.

Can a patio be built right up against the house?

Yes, and most are. The surface is pitched away from the foundation so water runs off rather than toward the house, and the finished height is set below the door threshold and any siding or brick ledge.

What is the difference between concrete pavers and natural stone?

Concrete pavers are manufactured, so sizes are consistent, the range of shapes and textures is wider and installation is faster. Natural stone is quarried, with variation in color and thickness that no manufactured product reproduces. Stone costs more and takes longer to set well. Both last when the base is right.

How soon can I use the patio after it is finished?

Straight away. Once the joints are sanded and set you can walk on it and put furniture out the same day. That is one of the practical advantages over poured concrete, which needs curing time before it takes traffic.

What size should I plan for?

It depends on what goes on it. A table with chairs needs clearance behind the seats to pull out, a seating group needs room to walk around, and a grill needs space in front of it. We measure the yard and talk through how you want to use it before putting a size on paper.
